Oscious Tembo, Zonal Head for Kanyindula, with the school’s pre-existing solar system. In 2010 Mr Tembo identified the need for lighting at the school to encourage the students to study after the hours of dark. Under direction from a technician in the village the school purchased a solar panel, battery and inverter in order to power lights in the office and one of the classrooms.
Mr Tembo explained that the system had assisted the students but is temperamental and expensive to maintain. As part of the SunnyMoney Schools initiative, the school purchased two SunKing Pros for K360,000 (£45), which are now used in the place of this system to light the classroom. These two lights should provide 5 years of safe, appropriate and maintenance-free lighting.
